Research Grants

This program is promoted by the Freie Universitat Berlin and supported by the United States Information Agency and the Canadian Embassy.

Under a program of grants funded by the Freie Universitat Berlin, the John F. Kennedy-Institut fur Nordamerikastudien awards grants of one to three month duration for scholars with a permanent European residence. The extensive holdings of the Institute's library make it possible that Europe an scholars researching various topics relating to the United States of America and Canada can consider an initial period of research in Berlin before they cross the Atlantic. Graduates at all stages in their career are invited to apply; scholars who are preparing a doctoral dissertation; a "Habilitationsschrift" or other research-oriented publications. Projects must be related to the United States of America and/or Canada in the fields of:

The amount of the monthly payment will be determined by the qualifications and the income status based on the following guidelines:

In addition every scholar will receive a lump sum for travel costs and a lump sum of DM 100.- for photocopies.

Since these stipends are not subject to income taxes or social security contributions, those with full stipends may not hold other jobs. The grantees are, however, required to take out health insurance for the period of the stipend.

All applications must be endorsed by a senior scholar supervising the project. Established scholars do not need recommendation.

After you have finished your work at the John F. Kennedy Institute we would appreciate a final report on your experiences. A questionnaire with guiding questions for your final report can be obtained here.

The screening committee meets in November (grants for the first half of the following year) and in June (grants for the second half of the year). Deadline s for applications are the 31st of October and the 31st of May. All grants must be used within the year for which they have been awarded.
