We have learned of the recent death of Prof. Irina Bădescu, whose name is closely linked to the beginnings and the development of Canadian Studies in Romania.
Irina Bădescu was a Professor at the University of Bucharest's Department of French Language and Literature. For many years she taught 18th century French literature as well as the literature of Québec and the other Canadian Francophonies. She took a keen interest in cultural issues and the question of identity in relation to the Francophones of North America, in particular those in Québec. In 1997 she and her colleague Monica Bottez at the Department of English founded the Canadian Studies Centre at the University of Bucharest, where they were responsible for a Master's programme in Canadian Studies. Irina Bădescu was also well known for her important scholarly activities and her many translations, and was a member of the Romanian Writers' Union. She will be sorely missed.
