Central European Association for Canadian Studies

 A bit of history

The CEACS brings together university teachers, researchers and students from the Central European region (interpreted broadly) who are doing work related to Canada. It traces its roots to the first meeting of Canadianists from this part of Europe in Budmerice, Slovakia, in May 1995 and the organization of the 1st International Conference of Central European Canadianists in Brno, the Czech Republic, three years later. For the next five years, a Central European Steering Committee for Canadian Studies guided the activities of Canadianists in the region, leading up to the foundation of the association in the summer of 2003. The first CEACS general assembly was held on 2 May 2004, and less than a month later the organization was admitted to the International Council for Canadian Studies, where it is now a full member.

Current activities

At the present time the association has 167 members, coming from Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia; a few individuals come from a scattering of other countries. Within each country, a wide range of activities is carried out by individual universities and centres and at the national level. Information about activities of the CEACS as a whole as well as  what is happening in the various countries in the region can be found on this website. The CEACS executive bodies help to coordinate these activities, providing regular information for all members and devising a wide range of new initiatives for the region. Every three years the association holds a major international multidisciplinary conference. It is also responsible for the publication of scholarly works on selected themes as well as of the annual Central European Journal of Canadian Studies, a peer-reviewed journal covering all areas of Canadian studies.

Organization and official bodies

The CEACS operates on the basis of its Constitution, which can be found by clicking here. Two bodies guide the association's activities, the Executive Committee and the Advisory Board.

The day-to-day affairs of the association are the responsibility of the Executive Committee, made up of the President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer as regular members, and the Editor-in-Chief of the Central European Journal of Canadian Studies as a non-voting member.
